Major Burns back off Texas A&M commitment

Texas A&M looked poised to nab one of Louisiana’s top prospects with an early February commitment on a big Super Bowl Watch Party recruiting function.

That momentum came to a screeching halt on Monday morning.

Major Burns, one of Louisiana’s top defensive backs and a soon-to-be riser in the new release of the Rivals rankings, withdrew his verbal pledge from Texas A&M. This comes in the aftermath of visits to rival SEC schools and new offers from Florida and LSU, among others.

Burns, currently tabbed as the No. 16-ranked player in The Boot and No. 34-ranked cornerback nationally has officially reopened his recruitment.

Burns’ stock is on the rise as camp season got underway. He’s proven to be a long, athletic cornerback with great closing speed and exceptional length to disrupt passing lanes and be physical with elite wide receivers. That spurred offers from the Sooners, Gators and Tigers, which offered Burns earlier this month.

The Aggies are still a school play, as Burns has frequently mentioned the team’s chances of winning a national championship in the near future. However, at Rivals Camp New Orleans, he raved about Oklahoma and the staff’s hard push for him in recent weeks. LSU hosted Burns for a junior day earlier in the spring, and as a Baton Rouge native, the offer carried a lot of weight.

Burns is now eyeing a commitment before his senior season at Madison Prep Academy (La.), but this could play out into the fall potentially.
