Magnolia LB/DE high on MSU, USM

College coaches and scouts are always looking for players with the physical tools that lead to the catchphrase known as “upside.”
Camden (Miss.) Velma Jackson High School is home to one such prospect.

Larry Blackmon (6-4, 209, 4.49) is an intriguing linebacker/defensive end due to his combination of a big frame and track speed.
“The coaches I talk to say they really like me at weakside linebacker the most,” he said. “I like that spot, too. I like being able to play pass coverage and rush the quarterback at different times. I just came from Mississippi State’s camp, and they had me working out with the linebackers. But I’m open to playing anywhere as long as I get on the field.”
Blackmon had 77 tackles and four sacks as a junior in earning Class 3A all-state honors. He’s also an all-state performer in track, where he qualified for the finals of the 200-meter dash (21.5) and was a member of the championship 800-meter relay team.
“Speed is my best attribute,” he said. “I can run for a big guy.”
And he’s getting bigger. Blackmon has bulked up about 10 pounds this off-season due to an aggressive weightlifting program.
He hasn’t received his first scholarship offer, but has been getting indications that Mississippi State, Memphis and Southern Miss may be close. Auburn, Vanderbilt, Colorado, Louisiana Tech and Ole Miss are also showing interest.
“My favorite right now is Mississippi State,” he said. “I’ve been to the school two or three times, watched practice, went to their spring game. I’ve met a bunch of the coaches at camp. My recruiting coach is coach Blake. We’re pretty cool. I really like the style of defense they play. It’s similar to our school’s. I also think I’d have a chance to come in and contribute pretty early there.”
Blackmon grew up a fan of Southern Miss. He said the Golden Eagles would have a good shot at him if they extend an offer.
“Definitely,” he said. “I like the school and the area a lot. I feel real comfortable there. It would be a good fit for me.”
Blackmon plans to camp at Louisiana Tech later this summer.
Academically, he carries a 3.0 GPA and has scored a 16 on his ACT. He projects as a full-qualifier.
