Mabin aiming higher

Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Calvary Christian Academy wide receiver Greg Mabin has earned two offers so far from Jacksonville State and Tulane.

"Honestly it was out of the blue, the first time I talked to either of those schools they offered me," Mabin said. "I have talked to them a little bit since I got the offers."

In addition to his offers, Mabin is also dealing with other schools such as Georgia, Miami, Pittsburgh, and Wisconsin.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound wide receiver recently took a trip north to visit a Big East program.

"I was up at Pittsburgh's camp a week ago," Mabin said. "It was really cool because my cousin Dorin Dickerson, he used to go there and he was an All-American there. He kind of showed me around a little bit. He told me about it up there. Plus, I have a lot of family up there. I love the facilities because they share with the (Pittsburgh) Steelers so you know everything is going to be top-notch. The coaching staff, I like them, but I don't know them too well. It was a lot of fun there too. The competition was great and I thought I held my own against them."

Since returning home, he made his way to Athens, Ga. to check out the University of Georgia and participate in the Mark Richt Football Camp.

"It was really fun," Mabin said. "I went there last year and really fell in love with the campus and everything. I love the coaching staff, the facilities, and everything. It was just a good experience."

During the camp Mabin worked at defensive back and got good feedback from one of the assistants on the Bulldogs' staff.

"The coach (Scott Lakatos) said that I am very close to getting an offer from them," Mabin said. "They liked the way that I played. They said my only downfall was that I wasn't at full speed for the camp because I hurt my hamstring a while back and that is still healing. So he said that if I could come up July 15th and perform at full speed then there would be a real good chance of me getting an offer from them. I am going to try to (make it back up there), but I don't know if I definitely can or not."

At this stage in the process, Georgia is the only school interested in Mabin on defense.

"Georgia is looking at me as a corner or safety," Mabin said. "I am primarily a wide receiver, but it isn't a big deal where I play."

The South Florida prospect mentioned possibly visiting Wisconsin on June 20th and Miami on June 25th.

Mabin, who claims no leader at this time, caught 59 receptions for 1,087 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior. As a sophomore, Mabin had 42 receptions for 906 yards and 10 touchdowns.
