LSU, Mississippi State in pursuit of four-star junior

Devonta Jason

A one-time LSU commit, Devonta Jason has more than 10 major scholarship offers. He also the talking points down. Favorites? He’s not naming them. Instead, the four-star prospect takes the safer route when asked about his recruitment.

“Everybody is kind of even right now,” Jason said. “There’s no particular leader. I want to check all these offers out and see what everyone has to offer.”

He shies away from nearly every other substitutive question but agrees to indulge just one. Jason, a class-of-2018 prospect who backed off of his commitment to LSU in July, doesn’t mind discussing which coaches are working hardest to build a relationship. Whether or not his response means much at such an early juncture is up for debate, but he tosses out the two at the front of his mind.

“I’ve been talking a lot to [LSU] Coach Les Miles and Coach [Dan] Mullen from Mississippi State,” Jason said. “There’s a lot of them but those are probably the two I know the most right now”

Jason is ranked as the No. 5 wide receiver and the No. 31 overall prospect in the 2018 class. He attends regional powerhouse Landry-Walker High School in New Orleans.

IN HIS WORDS: “They make it feel like home for an in-state kid at LSU,” Jason said. “They treat you good and make sure you feel all the love.”

RIVALS REACTION: Jason has two recruiting clichés working against each other. On one hand, prospects seldom back off of a commitment just to recommit to the same school down the road. On the other hand, top players from the state of Louisiana rarely spurn LSU. LSU only has a chance to land Jason should it finish the season with its coaching stability intact. If the Tigers tank and Les Miles once again finds himself on the hot seat, Jason is likely to leave the state.
