LSU, Miami are teams to watch for four-star linebacker

MIAMI – In a million different ways, recruiting is matter of semantics.

Prospects change their minds and speak in the moment. It’s why players have different answers to the same questions phrased in new ways. It’s also why four-star linebacker Andrew Chatfield recently managed to name an early frontrunner without actually naming an early frontrunner.

In one breath, the Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage standout says there is no favorite in his recruitment. In the next, he’s asked if he’s started to make a top-five list and which schools have been added to said list. Chatfield names just one.

Only in recruiting.

“The only one I can say that would definitely be in there would be LSU,” Chatfield said. “Miami would be close, but they’re going to have to offer me first.”

For such a reason, refraining to call LSU Chatfield’s leader seems to be a simple matter of terminology. Whatever the case, though, the hometown school is lurking in the weeds. Regardless of whether the Tigers lead or not, an offer from the Hurricanes has the power to change things.

“I talk to [Miami] here and there,” Chatfield said. “I don’t know what they’re doing with me yet. I’m just waiting for them.”

Still, there are other programs in play. Chatfield is in communication with a number of colleges. The schools he converse with most span time zones.

“LSU, Oregon, Wisconsin, Syracuse – Syracuse talks to me a lot,” Chatfield said. “Alabama, too. Alabama and Ohio State.”

RIVALS REACTION: LSU obviously holds an elevated place in Chatfield’s mind. The have to be seen as the favorite for the time being, but Miami will join the Tigers at the top should it decide to offer. Still, it’s to early to project where Chatfield may land on Signing Day.
