Louisville lands another Florida-based standout

Louisville’s Sunshine State conquest moved forward on Thursday with the commitment of four-star defensive back Chandler Jones. Jones, who made his commitment public with a tweet, makes eight Florida-based prospects in the Cardinals’ 2018 class

The stream of South Florida talent headed for campus is nice, sure, but the pipeline had little to do with Jones’ decision. When it came to choosing a school, the Miami Central defensive back took a much more analytical approach. This, it seems, was more of a science than an art.

“It was the correct fit for my talents and abilities, as mentioned before on my checklist of must-haves.” Jones said via text.

But the decision wasn’t totally robotic. As with most commitments, relationships played a role. One connection in particular made a lasting impact. Checklists aside, the bond Jones made with Cardinals assistant Lorenzo Ward helped seal the deal.

“Coach Whammy ward, we speak very often,” Jones said. “He’s a really cool knowledgeable guy. He coached my high school coach in the NFL, and my high school coach speaks very highly of him. Also, Coach Steve Fields has really helped me and my family feel welcomed.”

Jones will enroll early at Louisville and join the Cardinals prior to next year’ spring workouts. It’s a fact that he thinks will benefit him greatly, as early playing time seems to be of at least minor importance to him.

“I’ll have a chance to come in, work hard and learn the system and scheme,” Jones said. “That will give me a chance to play and contribute early.”

Jones is ranked as the No. 29 cornerback in the class of 2018. He is ranked as the No. 69 overall prospect in the state of Florida.
