The Latest: When Oregon State offered Louisiana wide receiver Anthony Spurlock last month, he was almost ready to commit on the spot. But after talking it over with assistant coach Jason Phillips, he elected to take his time so the two sides could get to know each other better. A month and a half later things are going well, with Spurlock and Phillips keeping in regular contact. Rivals.com caught up with Spurlock to talk about the Beavers and his plans to get to Corvallis for a visit later this year.
In His Words: “Oregon State came by in the spring and Coach Phillips came by my school and watched my practice and watched my tape with my coach. After that we had a chance to talk and he told me he liked what I saw and he thinks I have a passion for the game and he gave me an offer. We keep in touch and have talked a lot since then. He's just trying to get me up to the campus before I make a commitment. Right now they’re my top school because they have what I'm looking for with my major, computer engineering, and what they can offer me on the football side. He's just looking for me to get up there sometimes in the fall. It's a long trip so it's going to have to be an official visit. It will probably be week 6 or 7 of our season because we have two Thursday games this year.”
On his knowledge of Oregon State: “I just think about first of all Keenan Lewis, he came out of there, Brandin Cooks went there and then became a first round pick. They have a lot of small receivers so by the time I hit my growth spurt and fill out I think I would be one of their tallest receivers. I think I would fit in great, they're a spread team and they throw it around.”
On the significance of the offer: “It was a big deal for me because a big school gave me an opportunity without seeing me perform at a camp because a lot of schools have been asking for that. But I'm not really a camp guy I'm a field player and they saw that in me.”
Rivals Reaction: The Beavers are Spurlock’s only FBS offer to date and are clearly shaping up as the school to beat in his recruitment. The question is whether Spurlock can find a way to visit prior to the fall, when Oregon State’s commitment list might be close to full. It’s a situation worth watching as the coaching staff clearly sees something special in the Bayou pass catcher.
