Louisiana QB makes strong camp showing

Having
had his junior season cut short by injury, one of Louisiana's top quarterbacks

can't get back under center soon enough.
"I'm really anxious to get back on the field," said
Baton Rouge Redemptorist's
Kyle
Hebert. "I was off to a real good start last year, on my way to a big
season when I got hurt, so I'm ready to play again. It's been a long wait."
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Hebert completed 32 of his first
50 passes for 586 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior before suffering a
broken collarbone in the third game of the season. Now he's fully healed, as
evidenced by his recent showing in LSU's passing camp.
"We won the camp and I played really well," Hebert said.
"There were only two possessions the whole tournament that we didn't score. I
think I got some people's attention."
But enough to pave the pay to his hometown favorite, LSU?
"I don't know," he said. "I kind of have some doubts.
They had been showing me a lot of interest, but there seems to be a few in front
of me right now. I think they've got at least two or three quarterbacks ahead of
me on their board right now. I may have to look around for other options."
No scholarship offers have come his way thus far, but
Hebert says he's getting a lot of attention from Auburn, Clemson, Tennessee,
Northwestern and "all the other Louisiana state schools."
"Tennessee just started sending me stuff," he said. "I'm
kind of interested to see how much they stay in touch."
What will ultimately factor into his college decision?
"To me, it really doesn't matter where the school is," Hebert said. "It would
be nice to stay close to home, but I'm prepared to go anywhere that might be a
good fit for me. The main thing I'll be looking for is that it feels like home,
a family atmosphere, how they treat you."
He said he's probably done with his camp appearances and
will be spending the rest of his summer preparing for the 2002 season.
"I'm trying to get stronger," he said. "My arm strength
is really good, but I need to put on some weight to play at the high Division I
level. I've been working out really hard."
