Longhorns land three-star ATH Kelvontay Dixon

THE SITUATION

When it comes to Kelvontay Dixon's recruitment, there was always the question of "when" as opposed to "if."

The when refers to when the top-50 Lone Star State prospect would commit to Texas.

We received that answer on National Signing Day Eve when the three-star athlete from Carthage (Texas) High officially publicized his commitment. He will sign his national letter of intent with the Longhorns on Wednesday at his high school.

"Just the way they came out and carried themselves," Dixon told Rivals.

"My relationship with the coaches became stronger. It wasn’t too easy to make the call; it just felt like home."

Dixon was committed to Arkansas for part of last season, and even before he decommitted from the Razorbacks the in-state Longhorns began to involve themselves more regularly with the East Texas standout. The icing on the cake came when Head Hog Chad Morris was relieved of his duties, opening the door for Texas to add Dixon.

Dixon is the younger brother of current Texas running back Keontay Ingram.

HOW IT UNFOLDED

Dixon committed to Morris and the Razorbacks after a spring full of visits to Fayetteville, which led the talented athlete and Carthage High School teammate TyKieast Crawford to both commit to Arkansas.

Both East Texas standouts continued to make visiting The Hill a habit into the season, but poor results on the field eventually cost Morris his job. In the midst of the coaching staff turnover, Dixon wasted no time backing off his commitment.

By that time in his recruitment, Texas had already been in regular communication with Dixon.

Exchanging weekend game visits between Arkansas and Texas all of a sudden favored the Longhorns drastically. Still, the three-star athlete did not sign early and took his official visit to Austin on Jan. 24 weekend.

Still, this was Texas' race to lose since midway through the fall when they turned up the heat on Dixon.

RIVALS REACTION

Dixon is one of the top players in the state of Texas and is listed as one of the premier athletes because of how impactful a player he can be at a multitude of positions. He's a wide receiver, a slot receiver, all-purpose back or gadget-play option under center that's capable of providing a big-play spark any time he touches the ball.

Carthage did a fantastic job of getting Dixon involved in an array of different ways, ranging from jet-sweeps, screen passes, reverses, handoffs or simply throwing vertical routes downfield.

Dixon boasts good size (6-foot, 175 pounds) with fantastic track times. He holds the Carthage High record with a 10.71 100-meter. That speed shows on tape when he's able to outrun hosts of defenders, consistently make at least one defender miss on a given play and also burn defensive backs on routes downfield.

Texas would be best served to utilize Dixon's explosiveness, acceleration and speed by making an effort to get the talented athlete in space. It's also worth mentioning Dixon consistently generates separation from defenders, has phenomenal hands and a large catch radius.
