Lombardi earns Virginia offer

West Des Moines (Iowa) Valley 2017 quarterback Rocky Lombardi has his second offer after working out for Virginia coaches on Thursday.
"Coach (Steve) Fairchild came to see me throw this spring and told my football coach to send me out to camp because he wanted to get me on campus and talk with Coach (Mike) London," Lombardi said. "I went and it paid off for me. It was just a one-day camp and I worked with Coach Fairchild, the o-coordinator and quarterbacks coach."

Having seen Virginia in-person, Lombardi came away impressed and plans to evaluate the Cavaliers closely as his recruitment progresses.
"The campus is beautiful," he said. "Touring campus, it's a fun college town and was pretty going through it. The stadium was cool, and way bigger than I thought. I believe Coach Fairchild is one of the best in the business and I feel like he is going to get me to be the best quarterback I can be."
Lombardi got a good sense of the player-coach connection he had with Fairchild after working with him during Thursday's camp.
"When I first met him he's a little bit intimidating," Lombardi said. "But, once you get to know him he is a really good guy and pretty funny too. Working with him this camp really helped me understand his personality, how to get along with him and how to talk to him. It was fun and I was excited to work with him.
"Coach Fairchild is very big on accuracy and every rep matters. So, the whole camp he was constantly reminding us that we need to be accurate on every throw and hold yourself to a high standard. I got some feedback about how I was improved from when he came to watch me throw this spring."
A trip to Minnesota for the Gopher's camp last Saturday preceded Lombardi's most recent camp at Virginia.
"(Minnesota's) quarterback coach seemed to like me and I felt like I did pretty well there," Lombardi said. "He had me and a few guys stay after and had us throw some post routes."
Lombardi will make his final camp appearance of the summer this Saturday at Kansas State. He picked up his first offer of the process from Iowa State last month after their 7-on-7 camp.
The 6-foot-3, 196-pound Lombardi is coming off a sophomore season that saw him pass for 2,097 yards and 21 touchdowns against just seven interceptions.
