Lamar Consolidated fills holes with prospects

Coming off a Texas Class 4A state championship just months ago, Lamar Consolidated High School is back to business with hopes of defending its title.
Filling the gigantic hole left behind by 5-foot-6 running back Jacquizz Rodgers, who leaves the Mustangs as the state's all-time leading touchdown scorer (136) and rushed for 8,239 yards during his career, will be difficult.

The program moves on at Lamar Consolidated and Rodgers leaves it in good hands with quarterback D.J. Smallwood, who received his first official offer this week.
"Air Force offered D.J. this week," coach Lydell Wilson said. "He's a talented athlete who is getting better at the quarterback position. He's got some room to grow, but he can play."
Georgia Tech has also been by campus and is showing significant interest in Smallwood.
Schools are also taking notice of all-state selections Stephen Fleming and Pressley Godson. Fleming is a 6-foot-4 safety that led the area in interceptions last season, while Godson (6 feet 4, 275 pounds) opened many of the holes Rodgers squirted through.
"Fleming is a Division I guy with the most upside," Wilson said. "His frame is perfect for the position and he just has a nose for the ball. He's a play-maker. Godson is a honor roll student and a very good technician. Georgia Tech and Texas State really like him right now."
Coaches for Texas A&M has been inquiring about Fleming this spring and Wilson expects the courtship to continue with the Aggies.
