For the most part, Christian Kirk's weekend went as planned - it just happened to carry a bonus of sorts.
The Rivals100 wide receiver headed to California to visit USC and UCLA. Everything on those fronts went as planned. After he saw both campuses, however, he received a surprise courtesy of Nick Saban.
"Alabama just offered," Kirk said via text message on Sunday evening. "Alabama is a big one for me."
The offer from Alabama is the 26th for Kirk, who is ranked as the No. 3 wide receiver in the country. He plans to narrow his list down to 10 schools prior to the start of his senior season, so his run of offseason unofficial visits will factor heavily into his recruitment.
It's a run that started at USC over the weekend.
"The USC trip was a very good experience," Kirk said. "The history there is crazy."
Kirk also dropped in on the Trojans' in-state rivals over the weekend. At UCLA, Kirk and his father received plenty of individual attention. As it turns out, the visit was as important to head coach Jim Mora as it was to Kirk, whose recruitment will be accelerated because of an early high school graduation date.
"The UCLA visit went really well," Kirk said. "Coach Mora and the whole offensive staff hung out with us for a good five hours. They toured the whole campus with us, too."
Kirk's next unofficial visits will be to Ohio State on Feb. 27 and Oregon on Mar. 8.
As a junior at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro High School, he caught 142 passes for 2756 and scored 57 total touchdowns. He also rushed for 825 yards and carried 10.7 per-carry average.
