SAN ANTONIO - Unless there is a drastic surprise, Daniel Carlson plans to stick with his Auburn commitment.
The Colorado Springs (Colo.) Classical Academy kicker said at U.S. Army Bowl registration that he was disappointed coach Jay Boulware was not retained by Auburn's new staff but he's willing to move on and is excited to learn about the Tigers' new hire.
"Right now I'm sticking with Auburn and I still love them," Carlson said.
"They should be hiring a new special teams coach soon, and hopefully I'll know by Monday. From what I've talked to coach (Gus) Malzahn, I like the situation and he really likes me and he's going to get a good guy.
"As long as I like the coach, and I think he'll be good, I'll stick with Auburn. I liked Coach Boulware and he was a good coach, but there are plenty of good coaches. He'll do a good job hiring a good special teams coach. We still have to see, but I like Auburn so hopefully I'll be there."
Carlson, who has been committed since July 1, said numerous schools have reached out in recent weeks to gauge interest. He's shown them the proper respect but has informed all the coaches that he's loyal to his Auburn commitment.
The three-star kicker doesn't see many scenarios in which he'd back off his pledge.
"A couple schools have reached out, but I told them I'm going to wait and see," Carlson said.
"Arizona State, Arizona, Stanford, Virginia, Florida and LSU are also options, but I've kind of just told them I'm going to wait and I'll contact them later one way or another."
