Kentuckys top OL adds big offer

Kentucky’s top offensive lineman has added another scholarship offer and is preparing for his lone camp appearance of the summer.
Four-star Mayfield tackle Micah Jones has added Michigan to a list of scholarship offers that previously included Kentucky, Louisville, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Indiana.

Jones (6-5, 336, 5.15) also received calls from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Miami and Tennessee during the May contact period. He plans to camp this weekend at UGA.
“One of my friends on the team thought it would be fun to go down there and check things out,” he said. “Their coaches have been in touch with me, and I know there’s going to be some great competition at their camp. I’m looking forward to it.”
Jones says he doesn’t have a clear favorite or a top five at this point, but Kentucky appears to be in good position.
“I’ve always been a Kentucky fan,” he said. “When I was younger, it was more for basketball, but they’re really building something good in football.
“I like their new coaches a lot. Joker Phillips and coach (Rich) Brooks seem like really nice people. Really, the whole staff is that way. I got to meet them when they invited me to a basketball game (Feb. 23 versus Mississippi State). I was impressed by how professional they were. A bunch of them have experience in the NFL, and that’s where I want to be someday. I want to play for coaches who know what it takes to get there.”
Jones said Kentucky also holds an advantage over some of the other schools on his list due to the opportunity to get early playing time.
“They tell me they’re losing a few O-Linemen and need to sign a few this year,” he said. “They think I can make an early impact. I want to go somewhere I can get some playing time and not have to wait until I’m a junior to get a shot.”
He did, however, mention Georgia, Florida State and Michigan as other schools he’s followed growing up.
“They’re all great programs who have developed a lot of good NFL players,” he said. “Michigan has always had a bunch of good O-Linemen. They get some heavy exposure, so that’s a plus for them.”
The Mayfield star has had an uneventful summer. He decided to cut back on summer camps in order to concentrate on individual workouts and academics. His core GPA is 2.3, which he hopes to improve as a senior, but he recently scored a very solid 21 on the ACT.
“That was a big relief,” he said. “That takes some pressure off.”
