Kentucky legacy talks recruiting

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Two-way lineman Dave Ulinski's grandfather Harry Ulinski played for legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant at the University of Kentucky. Given those strong ties, it's no surprise that the Wildcats currently are a big factor in the 6-foot-6, 300-pounder's recruitment.
"I favor Kentucky a little bit you could say," Ulinksi said. "They have been on me the longest or whatever. I would always go to Kentucky games with my grandfather and he knows so many people. My grandfather would always tell me stories about playing for the Bear.

"But I am going to go to the school that fits me best."
Wildcats' coach Rich Brooks' recent contract extension, the product of a surprising 8-5 season in Lexington that included wins over Georgia and Clemson, makes UK even more attractive to Louisville DuPont Manual prospect.
"It's definitely helping (UK)," Ulinksi said. "I shows their stability. You know you used to wonder who the coach was going to be in two years and now you know that those guys are going to be there. It makes the program look good for the future."
Despite Ulinksi's strong ties to the Wildcats, he is interested in other schools, particularly Notre Dame.
"I've always been interested in Notre Dame," he said. "I watched the movie Rudy growing up and I've always been interested in going up there and seeing what it is like."
Louisville also has been showing interest in the in-town standout.
For most of his high school career, Ulinski has played defensive tackle. But the best fit for him in college could be on offense. He could play both ways during his senior season at DuPont Manual.
"I have always played and I love playing defense," he said. "I wouldn't have a problem playing offense, though. I am on defense right now, but I will let the college coaches decide where I should play in college."
David's grandfather, Pennsylvania native Harry Ulinksi has his number retired at the University of Kentucky. He was part of an interesting recruiting strategy that Bryant used while at UK. The legendary coach went into Ohio and Western Pennsylvania to get players to come to the Southeastern Conference's northernmost program.
Harry Ulinski went on to play for the Washington Redskins from 1950-56. He was a pro bowl selection at center.
David Ulinski is a Rivals250 to watch member for the Class of 2008.
