Kansas sets off fireworks in Texas, lands four-star Dakyus Brinkley
Kansas set off fireworks on Tuesday as four-star outside linebacker Dakyus Brinkley announced his commitment to the Jayhawks on the holiday. Out of Katy (Texas), Brinkley chose the Jayhawks over nearly 20 other scholarship offers.
It is Lance Leipold and company that have won out for the defender out of the Greater Houston Area. Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M were among the programs that were involved with Brinkley earlier in the recruiting process.
The consistent approach that the Jayhawks had in the recruitment of Brinkley stood out to the four-star. Leipold and his staff treated him as a priority, and he grew comfortable with assistants Taiwo Onatolu and Jordan Peterson.
"Kansas has always been there and showed love since the beginning," Brinkley told Rivals.com about his pledge to the Jayhawks. "There was no on-and-off. They have also believed in me since they started recruiting me."
At Katy (Texas) Seven Lakes, Brinkley accounted for nearly 50 tackles, made eight tackles for loss, and got to the quarterback a pair of times during his junior season. Now at Texas powerhouse Katy, the stage is set for Brinkley conclude his prep career with a bang.
Brinkley is the latest example of the Jayhawks' focus in the Lone Star State paying off. he joins four-star cornerback Damani Maxson and high three-star running back Harry Stewart in Texans committing to play in Kansas on the next level.
For Brinkley, it was as simple as feeling at home in Lawrence. He took his official visit to the Sunflower State in early June. Nearly a month later, he publicly announced that Lawrence would be his collegiate destination.
"It also felt like home," said Brinkley.
Dakyus Brinkley becomes the third four-star in the Jayhawks' 2024 haul, joining Maxson and Michigan defensive back Jalen Todd. Rivals ranks Brinkley as the No. 63 recruit in Texas and the No. 27 outside linebacker prospect nationally.
