Kalon Barnes ready for closer look at Baylor, Texas Tech

As Kalon Barnes works on knocking out his spring visits, the shape of his recruitment is also coming into focus a little bit more.

Following an appearance at Texas for the Longhorns junior day on February 25, Barnes said that things are starting to heat up with Baylor, and that he’ll be in attendance for the Bears spring game on April 22. In addition to that, he plans on making a trip out to Lubbock soon after having to miss Texas Tech's junior day this past weekend due to basketball commitments.

“This is great,” he said at Texas junior day. “This was my first time just touring the school, but I’ve been here before. With Texas being my childhood dream school, it made coming out here even better.”

Meanwhile, one of the earlier teams involved with Barnes, Texas A&M, seems to have cooled on its pursuit of the wide receiver, but he still says the Aggies are still staying in the picture.

“They were on me like hard-hard,” he said. “But something’s happened through the weeks and months they must have thought something. They still keep in touch, Coach (Jim) Turner will come by the school every couple of weeks and show up to our basketball practices and stuff.”

IN HIS WORDS

On Baylor

“Coach Matt Rhule has opened my mind on some things,” he said. “He showed me some things I hadn’t seen before. I went to his office, he showed me his playbook - most coaches show you a playbook and are like ‘study this’ he actually went over it me.”

“When you’re at Baylor, most people try to go out, do other things,” he said. “But he said everything you need is in that one little space right there at Baylor, so you can stay out of trouble and stuff like that.”

On Texas Tech

“I have been in touch with Coach (Emmett) Jones,” he said. “He’ll be texting me like every other day, send me like a positive quote, trying to keep everything on track. We talk on the phone, but I want a face-to-face relationship with him, so I’ll get there.”

RIVALS REACTION

Barnes has all the potential to be one of the state’s top receivers, but has kept a relatively low profile throughout his recruitment. He hasn’t given too many specifics about his plans to commit, but with the stops to Baylor and Texas Tech still on the agenda, he could be narrowing some things down.

He said the only other trip that he’d like to make outside of those two would be a return to Texas, but if he doesn’t have a clear feeling as to when the Longhorns might offer, he may choose to make a quicker decision with the teams already in the picture.
