Position: Wide Receiver
Size and Speed: Joe stands 6-foot-5, weighs 200 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. Cowan possesses a 235 pound bench press and recorded a 32-inch vertical jumps.
Statistics: Cowan caught 37 passes for 917 yards and nine touchdowns. He averaged 24.8 yards per catch.
Honors: Joe was selected team co-MVP with Derrick Williams. Only one other underclassman ever won the coveted MVP award in the 60 years the school has been in existence. Not to shabby both Cowan and Williams are back for an encore in 2002. Cowan was also all-league and all-area his junior season.
Favorite Schools: Stanford and Notre Dame are high on this talented wide receivers list. He attended UCLA’s junior day this past weekend. Washington, Washington State and the entire Pac 10 is interested in the tall lanky wide receiver from Saint John Bosco. LSU from the SEC is also showed attention to Cowan.
The Skinny: Joe has the bloodlines; his father is former Husky QB Tim Cowan. Joe’s dad Tim led to the Huskies to a Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl during his time as a starter. The younger Cowan has camped with the Huskies for the last two years.
Not only does Joe have great size, but also he can jump out of the gym. He’s a super all-around athlete who participates in track and club soccer.
Joe really likes new Notre Dame head coach Ty Willingham and also loves Stanford. He more than likely would have been Cardinal bound if Willingham was still coach for Stanford. Now it seems to be a close race between Stanford and Notre Dame. But don’t count Washington and UCLA.
This talented athlete will also play some defense this season and return punts and kicks for Bosco this season.
“Joe is a tremendous athlete,” said St. John Bosco head coach Kiki Mendoza. “He rerally coming into his own as an athlete.”
Cowan is a big time player with big time talent. Put St. John Bosco on your list of teams to see this year if you are from Southern California…
One More Before You Go:
There is another player from St. John Bosco who will get a lot of attention from D1 schools and he is offensive lineman Nick Silva. Nick stands 6-foot-4, weighs 295 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 5.5 seconds. Don’t let the 40 time fool you. Nick moves pretty well for his size and possesses better than average feet.
Nick came to Bosco as a soft freshman but he has worked real hard on his frame and he is very solid going into his senior year. Silva has been a starter since his sophomore season. He has the potential to be as good as former St. John Bosco standout offensive lineman Paul Mociler (UCLA). Oregon, Oregon State, ASU and Arizona are showing interest…
