Junior to Watch: Derrick Harper
School: Montclair, N.J.
Position: Wide Receiver
Size and speed: Derrick is 6-foot-3, 180 pounds and runs a 4.35-second 40-yard dash.
Statistics: Derrick had 35 catches for more than 800 yards with eight touchdowns as a junior. He also ran back two punts for touchdowns and averaged more than 25 yards-per-return. On defense, he made 50 tackles, three interceptions, three forced fumbles and had one fumble recovery.
Honors: All-league, all-conference, all-county
Favorite Schools: No favorites at this time, but he has been contacted by more than 30 programs.
Skinny: Another great athlete from the state of New Jersey, Derrick also plays basketball for Montclair and averages more than 17 points a game as a small forward. He has heard from Syracuse, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Virginia, Iowa, Georgia, Penn State, Maryland and others.
Derrick was invited to many junior days, but was unable to attend most because of basketball. However, he did attend Maryland’s Junior Day in the middle of February.
"I'd like to visit a few schools before my season starts. I want to get an idea of what I can expect from the schools."
Harper is another player that could play a few different positions in college. Besides his great speed, he also has excellent jumping ability and very soft hands.
Derrick should have offers coming his way before the summer begins.
