Juniors to Watch: Andrew Gonzales

School: Ventura (Calif.) Buena

Position: Defensive Line

Size and Speed: Andrew stands 6-foot-0, weighs in at 270 pounds and runs a 5.4. 40-yard dash. He benches 250 pounds but look for that to improve. He wasn’t able to lift due to an injury.

Statistics: N/A.

Honors: Andrew was selected all-league, all-county and was his team MVP defensive lineman.

Favorite Schools: Gonzales is hearing from Arizona, Colorado State, Utah, San Diego State, UNLV and Fresno State.

The Skinny: Andrew may not be a blazer when it comes to his 40-yard dash time, but he is incredibly quick off the line and very agile. He is also one of the state’s best wrestlers and and was undefeated until the masters this past season. Andrew is one of favorites to take state meet next wrestling season.

Because of Andrew’s wrestling skills he uses his hands real well. He gets good up field pressure and has an outstanding motor who plays sideline-to-sideline.

Gonzales is a tough guy whose only drawback is his height. If he qualifies, someone will take a chance. “Andrew is the type of player who is going to make some team look awful smart,” said Buena head coach Rick Scott. “He’s the guy you see all the time in the Pac 10 some undersized over achiever who someone takes a chance on and ends being an impact player.”
