Position: Running back
Size and speed: Abrams is 5-foot-11 and 186 pounds. He has been timed at 4.49 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He is also set to fully academically qualify with a 3.3 grade-point average.
Statistics: Abrams helped Apopka to the Class 6A state championship with 960 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. Apopka operates out of a wing-T running attack, and they turned to Abrams late in the season to have him carry the load to the state title game.
Favorite Schools: LSU has offered a scholarship, and Abrams lists the Tigers along with Florida, Florida State, Miami and Tennessee as his early top teams.
Skinny: When Apopka, Fla., running back Alan Abrams dialed the number on the phone in his coach’s office he didn’t know what to expect. A few short seconds later he found out what he wanted to know.
He had his first scholarship offer.
“It was either last Wednesday or Thursday,” Abrams said. “One of the LSU coaches called the school and asked my coach to have me call back. I then called and it was coach (Nick) Saban on the other end.
“He offered me a scholarship right away. I was a little tempted to take it right there, but I told him that I need to think about it.”
Don’t worry Alan, you’ll have plenty more offers to think about shortly.
That’s because Abrams is one of the top players in the state of Florida and another early candidate for The Rivals100 team – a list of the top 100 players in the nation selected by Rivals100.com.
What is it that makes Abrams stand out above the others?
“I think I’m a little bit of everything,” Abrams said. “I think I see the field pretty good, and I’m able to run over you but also able to use my speed to get away from guys.
“We use a lot of misdirection because of the wing-T, and I like running those plays because it gives me an opportunity to break big plays. I think I belong up there with the best in the state.”
Abrams also excels in the classroom with a 3.3 grade-point average and a focus on a career track that’ll take him to a business or marketing major in college.
“I was originally at Edgewater, and I tried to go to private school here to get better grades, but they didn’t allow me to transfer,” he said. “They thought I was just going over there to follow a coach. I ended up at Apopka, and I think it’s worked out pretty good.”
Sure has.
And now Abrams is primed and ready for a senior season that hopefully will include another state title and a 1,000 yards rushing. And along the way, he’ll have his pick of colleges.
“The perfect school will be a team that has a running offense,” he said. “I’m also going to be asking about the graduation rate. That’s important to me, too.”
