Josh McCulloch moving recruitment forward with in-state visits

Don’t let the glasses fool you, there is a Clark Kent element to Josh McCulloch.

The mild-mannered Aldine Davis offensive lineman is all smiles in casual conversation, but when he’s lined up this spring to take on defensive linemen in camp events, he’s anything but.

A number of top programs have initiated contact with him, like Duke, Stanford and Texas, but his recruitment has really only started moving forward over the last few weeks. After visiting Texas State at the end of February, McCulloch is on campus at SMU this weekend.

“We’ve just been talking with the coaches and trying to build up a relationship with the coaching staff so far,” he said. “We’ll see how it turns out when I go up there, see if I like the campus.”

McCulloch said that he has been in contact most with Buddy Wyatt, but that things are still in the preliminary stages. Perhaps some of that could change if there is some more mutual interest after this weekend.

“I just want to see if I am going to like the campus or not,” he said. “Parents always say, don’t go for football. Go because you like the campus, the academics, it’s a lot more than just football to look at, but I am going up to see the campus and how they operate the football team.”

After this weekend, McCulloch’s next stop will be UTSA on the first weekend of April, and he’s in a similar place with the Roadrunners and only just getting more familiar with the program.

In the meantime, he’ll be doing his research to make sure that when some of these schools start making good on offers, he’ll have a good idea about which programs may be the best fit for him.

“Academics are the top priority for me,” he said. “I’m looking to go to college to get the education, not to get out in three years. The academics are the biggest part, and if I like the facilities and the connection with the team, those are the biggest things for me.”
