Columbus (Ind.) East running back Markell Jones is off to a strong start in his junior season. He hopes that momentum translates over to the recruiting trail, particularly with Indiana University, where he will be this weekend.
"I am getting up to IU vs. Navy on Saturday," Jones said. "I have been in contact with Coach [Herb] Haygood, [Kevin] Wilson and [Deland] McCullough. I like the staff up there a lot. They are really cool and I'm hoping they offer soon."
The 5-foot-9, 201-pound Jones does already have one offer to his credit. It came last month from Toledo, and he anticipates more following soon.
"The Toledo one was really unexpected, but it was still an awesome feeling," Jones said. "It was a relief and a weight off my chest.
"I have been getting a lot of interest from Ball State and IU. I think they are close to offering as well - when the time is right for them."
Jones has also seen an influx of new interest from schools since Sept. 1. Among the schools that have reached out in the past week are Florida State, Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State.
In the 17 months before he needs to sign a national letter of intent, Jones is hoping to draw some interest for a couple specific schools.
"Auburn has been my school since I was younger, but I don't know if that is realistic or not," he said. "At Cincinnati our quarterback from a couple years ago, Gunner Kiel, just transferred down there. I went down there for one of the one-day camps for the summer, and I liked Cincinnati a lot. I'd like to see more interest from them."
Columbus East has started off their 2013 season 2-0, and Jones has been a key catalyst for their early success carrying 27 times for 358 yards and seven touchdowns in those two wins.
