KILLEEN, Texas -- Friday was decision day for Rivals100 defensive tackle Kendell Jones, and the Central Texas standout let everyone in on what he has had on his mind in recent weeks. He was ready to declare his commitment to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
When he narrowed his list to Alabama, Baylor, LSU, Texas, and Texas A&M, he knew his announcement was not far away. The date of the Killeen Shoemaker spring game was circled, and college football fans were left to wait.
Jones announced his decision after the Grey Wolves' spring game and as media and fans gathered around, he stated his intentions.
Jones is one of the more unique prospects in the 2016 recruiting class. The 6-foot-5, 360-pound defender has been appropriately nicknamed the Hulk. He is extremely strong, and he is definitely a physically imposing figure to opponents. He is also a guy who requires multiple blockers in the middle of the defense and when he is not making a play, he creates playmaking opportunities for his teammates.
It did not take long for college coaches to find the standout Central Texas defender, and it took even less time for the offers to pour in from across the country. Alabama was one of many who made the standout defensive tackle a top priority.
Before making his commitment he was able to take visits to several college programs, many of which he visited multiple times. He was able to research his choices on and off the field, and in the end Alabama and Nick Saban were able to secure his commitment.
Jones is currently ranked No. 88 in the current Rivals100, No. 11 among the nation's 2016 defensive tackles, and No. 10 in the Rivals.com Texas Top 100.
He was named district defensive newcomer of the year and first-team all-district in 2013. He earned first-team all-district, area defensive player of the year, honorable mention all-state honors in 2014.
