Physical DB Gipson goes with the Gamecocks

The month of July has been a good one on the recruiting trail for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Entering the final day of the month, they had reeled in six commitments for the 2018 class in July, but you have to add one more to that list before we move to August.

Defensive back Jonathan Gipson committed to South Carolina over Indiana and Tennessee. The 6-foot-1, 185 pound senior out of Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek has visited Columbia (S.C.) numerous times and he is ready to that his home in the future.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: "I knew South Carolina was the school for me when I visited them a couple of weeks ago," said Gipson. "I went back home to talk about with my brother, some other family members and some of my coaches to make sure, but I knew that was where I wanted to be.

T-ROB WAS FIRST TO KNOW: "I actually called to let coach T-Rob (Travaris Robinson, defensive coordinator) know of my commitment first. I called him on Saturday and told him. Then I called coach [Will] Muschamp to tell him about it on Sunday. I think both were just ready for it to happen. They were excited and they acted like they already knew it was coming. It was a great experience."

FEELING COMFORTABLE IN COLUMBIA: "It came down to that feeling I had when I was on their campus. I just felt the most comfortable there. I have visited South Carolina four or five times now, so I know a lot about the school, I love the coaches and it hit me that I need to be there when I was on my last visit."

DB DEVELOPMENT: "I love coach Muschamp and coach T-Rob, and how they know how to coach up defensive backs. Coach Muschamp has talked to me about the many guys he has coached and helped get to the NFL. I believe he and coach T-Rob can really help me develop and become that great player. I feel they have a plan for me when I get there and I have not felt that about anyone else. Muschamp and T-Rob are probably the two main reasons I committed. Yes, I felt great there, but knowing how they can coach and develop me means a lot."

DONE WITH RECRUITING: "It has been stressful and I have put in a lot of time researching schools, so it feels great to be committed. Commitment to me is more than just a word, so I am committed to South Carolina and I do not plan to visit any other schools. I have done my homework, I have made my decision, and all of this was overwhelming at times, so I am happy to have it over with."

RIVALS REACTION: Another very good pick-up out of Georgia for the Gamecocks. Longterm, Gipson is likely a safety, but he has talked with the South Carolina about cornerback and safety the past few months. He is a physical player with good size and ball skills. Muschamp wants to recruit Georgia hard and he is having success in the Peach State this summer.
