Johnson happy with early decision

Collin Johnson has years left before heading to college but he's already made his decision to commit to Texas and there is no looking back.
His brother, Kirk, is a 2015 running back who has pledged to the Longhorns. His father, Johnnie, played in Austin. So when the offer came for the 2016 wide receiver from San Jose (Calif.) Valley Christian, Texas immediately stood out.

"Once the offer came I knew it was a great school and it's a plus that my dad went there and everything," Johnson said. "When we got the offer we were really happy but it wasn't the right time to commit.
"We promised these other schools we would go and visit them so we wanted to go and see some other schools. I visited a lot of the Pac-12 schools but none of them compared to Texas. We talked it over as a family and we figured we'd fly over there and see a practice one more time and we committed while we were there."
Johnson, who shined at the RCS Northern California, really liked meeting the new Texas coaches. Charlie Strong impressed him and his father played with wide receivers coach Les Koenning during their time in Austin so the 2016 standout said it was a perfect fit.
"They have clear goals they want to accomplish," Johnson said. "They're definitely going in the right direction to get it done. I like that a lot. I also like how (Strong) really cares about the student-athletes and he wants more for them than football. He really cares about them as people, too.
"Coach (Koenning) played with my dad at Texas, too, so with him coaching me it's great. It's like a home away from home. I really like the coaching staff and I felt it was a perfect fit for me."
Recruiting will not stop and Johnson seems to know it. Miami is showing more interest. Arizona State, Cal, Oregon State, Colorado State, Rutgers, TCU and Utah have all offered. Many others could get involved but Johnson said he's sticking with the Longhorns and does not plan to switch.
"It's pretty early for me but my dad and I talked about it and my family is big on values," Johnson said.
"Once you're engaged you don't go out and date other women. It's going to be hard because other schools are going to try to recruit me but I'm going to try to close the door on that and try to just focus on getting better every day, go to these camps and bring the best me I can bring to Texas in 2016."
