Jaylen Ellis left with much to think about after numerous big offers

Few players in the country have had the sort of spring that rising three-star wide receiver Jaylen Ellis continues to enjoy.

The Round Rock, Texas, prospect was the first commit in Baylor’s 2019 class, but has been picking up some very high-profile offers to wrap up spring. As summer begins, Ellis has no shortage of major programs should he choose to make a change from the Bears, but he thinks even more teams could throw their names into the hat sooner than later.

“It feels good that teams are finally just looking at me now,” he said. “Now it’s really getting to a point that it’s going to take off even more from now.”

With the opportunity to make some official visits before the end of the summer and willingness on his end to make some to programs that are recent offers, the Bears staff seemingly has its work cut out to keep him in the fold. Ellis’ three most recent offers, Ohio State, Tennessee and Texas, are just a few that they’ll need to hold off if he’s going to end his recruitment as he’s started it.

“I still enjoy Baylor, still enjoy the staff – I still have strong feelings for them,” he said. “They obviously mean a lot to me, just being in Waco, it’s special whenever I’m out there … the coaches are hitting me up more every day and they’re not rushing me. They said that if I want to do something, I can do it, but I still have that same love for them.”

IN HIS WORDS

On Ohio State

“At first, talking to Coach (Urban) Meyer, it was about speed,” he said. “He told me he thinks that I have legit speed and he told me that ‘we can get that 10.4 (100 meters) that you ran in district down to a 10.1. We’ve done it before and we can do it again,’ so I think my speed is what’s really impressive to him.”

On Garrett Wilson’s influence on his consideration of Ohio State

“He’s recruiting me pretty heavily – he told me make Ohio State the move,” he said. “He was the one that told me when the offer comes to look at it seriously. He was the one that told me that they were looking at me first so we’ve been talking about it for the past couple of weeks.”

On Tennessee

“That’s a big SEC school,” he said. “That came out of nowhere a little bit too, but I know that they’re looking to get back on top and that would be big. I would rather play for a team that’s building towards something.”

“I talked to Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt today, actually, and just what he was describing – how they want to build that offense, get the ball out and open things up more sounded good,” he said. “He said they would get me the ball and they need someone to take the top off. A lot of people say that, but they want to spread the ball around and said that I am the guy that can help them with that.”

On Texas

“I talk to Coach (Drew) Mehringer every day,” he said. “We talk and it’s just been a natural conversation as it’s been for the past couple of weeks. I am going to make another visit on Monday or Tuesday so just to be back out there – now with an offer – it’s a little more special to me.”

“I went with Garrett to a spring practice and that was really fun,” he said. “I have been to multiple games, been out to multiple practices, so I have a pretty good idea about what it’s like there … I feel strong about Texas, just knowing who Texas is, what they run, how they’re building. It’s a place I probably could see myself at, but other than that, I do enjoy Texas.”
