J3M Select Tryouts: 15 new names to know in Tennessee

Former five-star and Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Josh Malone has moved on to the NFL ranks with the Cincinnati Bengals but that hasn't stopped him from being involved in the recruiting world. Malone is giving back to his hometown of Nashville by sponsoring a 7-on-7 team that features some of the best players in the Volunteer State. On Saturday, the team held tryouts in the Nashville area and while highly-ranked and well-known players like Trey Knox, Lance Wilhoite, Jaden Johnson, Darin Turner and Jackson Hannah all impressed as expected, there were plenty of under the radar players who shined as well. Today we take a look at the 15 players who caught our eye and will be names to watch going forward.

Recruiting Wrap: Mullens has offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Missouri.

Performance: Normally a player of Mullins ranking wouldn't be on the list of new guys to know but despite his four-star status, he's relatively unknown to most recruiting observers. That won't be the case for long as Mullins put in an excellent showing while working out at defensive back on Saturday. Named the event's MVP for his showing, Mullins proved that his skillset can translate to either side of the ball with his play at the event.

Recruiting Wrap: Mitchell is waiting on his first offer.

Performance: A hard-hitting safety who had a breakout junior season, Mitchell came into the event and more than held his own alongside some higher ranked defensive back prospects. His footwork in drills showed that he's more than just a hard hitter, he's also capable of holding his own in coverage.

Recruiting Wrap: Hamilton has an early offer from Virginia Tech.

Performance: Hamilton was one of the most sure-handed prospects at the event, catching pass after pass while also showing a nice ability to get off the line for a player his size. Hamilton is an established blocker at the high school level but showed Saturday he can also make defenses pay in the passing game.

Recruiting Wrap: Bond has an early offer from Arkansas State.

Performance: Elite prospects come out of Oakland High School on a yearly basis and Bond is hoping to be the next Patriots player to go to a Power Five school. During the year he was a tackling machine and Saturday's event gave him a chance to showcase his ability to cover ground in open space. Bond has good speed and quick feet

Recruiting Wrap: Herbstreit is waiting on his first offer.

Performance: The son of former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit, Trey clearly inherited some of his father's athleticism and he showed it off while working at wide receiver on Saturday. He ran sharp routes and showed consistent hands, drawing praise from several of the event's coaches. He likely projects to a slot receiver at the next level and is one to watch heading into the offseason.

Recruiting Wrap: Wilder is waiting on his first offer.

Performance: Class of 2018 Whitehaven defensive back Rayshad Williams is one of the hottest defensive backs in the Southeast in terms of recruiting interest and Wilder could be the next long cornerback to garner attention at the school. Wilder's size immediately stands out but it was his ability to move during drills that shows he's capable of player cornerback at the next level.

Recruiting Wrap: Boddie is waiting on his first offer.

Performance: A versatile playmaker from a relativly small program, Boddie came into Saturday's event with a chip on his shoulder. He more than held his own, looking electric with the ball in his hands. He looks like he could play on either side of the ball in college and will likely have the chance to audition as both a wide receiver or defensive back for coaches this offseason.

Recruiting Wrap: Watkins has an early offer from UTSA.

Performance: The three-star athlete projects best to running back at the next level and he showed an ability to maintain his speed while keeping a low center of gravity during drills. He also showed good hands while catching passes and should add to his offer list in the coming months.

Recruiting Wrap: Martin is waiting on his first offer.

Performance: Overton has produced several Power Five prospects in recent years and it appears as if Martin could be the next one to emerge from the school. At 6-foot-3 and nearly 200 pounds, Martin has ideal size for a big-time wide receiver and he showed a nice ability to move during drills as well. He will have his chances to shine at camps this offseason and Saturday's showing was a good way to kick things off.

Recruiting Wrap: Willis is waiting on his first offer.

Performance: It's normally hard for a player Willis' size to stand out at event but he showed there's a reason why players his height are starting at college programs all over the country. Willis has good hips and quick feet and exactly the type of attitude you look for in a lockdown defender. He still has the frame to add more weight, which he will need to play at the next level, but it's clear the skillset is there for him to earn a shot.

Top Five Young Guns

Recruiting Wrap: Horton is waiting on his first offer.

Performance: Horton hasn't even made it to high school yet but on Saturday he was there going toe-to-toe with some of Tennessee's best high school prospects. Listed at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, Horton is a tall, long defensive back who has the ability to turn and run with smaller receivers but also match up well with bigger offensive players. He is obviously still developing but will surely have plenty of offers before it's all said and done.

Recruiting Wrap: Shaw is waiting on his first offer.

Performance: Shaw just finished his sophomore season a couple of months ago but physically he looks like a much older prospect. East Nashville has produced an increased amount of talent in recent years, including 2017 five-star linebacker Jacob Phillips and 2019 four-star Jashon Watkins. If he continues to develop, Shaw will be the next Power Five prospect to come out of the program.

Recruiting Wrap: Tisdale has early offers from Kentucky, Louisville and Purdue.

Performance: One of the more well-known 2020 prospects in the Southeast, Tisdale is still waiting for the offers to come in to match his elite skillset. On Saturday he worked out at defensive back and he has the type of length and playmaking ability that college coaches fall in love with. After spending his high school season playing both ways, it's clear he's versatile, but he has a very bright future ahead of him at defensive back.

Recruiting Wrap: Turrentine has early offers from Ole Miss and Tennessee.

Performance: Even though he just finished up his freshman season at Nashville-area powerhouse Ensworth, Turrentine is already becoming a regular on the offseason circuit. He impressed last year as a rising freshman and has only gotten better after a year of development. He could play either way in college but looks like a future star defensive back.

Recruiting Wrap: French is waiting on his first offer.

Performance: Whitehaven is known for producing elite linebacker prospects and it looks like the program has another good one in French. The big-bodied prospect is listed as an outside linebacker now, but could slide to inside depending on his growth going forward. Known for his affinity for contact, he showed a nice ability to move in space during Saturday's event.
