Tramal Ivy identifies himself as a Midwestern guy and says he has no interest in the Pac 12 or ACC. His love for the SEC is there, but it's muffled. This makes the Muskogee (Okla.) High School defensive end a bit of a rarity in today's recruiting culture.
He has trouble articulating the specific reasons why he feels the way he does. The three-star prospect just assumes stay close to home.
"I just like it," Ivy said. "I don't really know. It seems like the people … and we always have good football teams overall. Other than like LSU and Alabama, the best football teams are around here" Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Arkansas… "
For now, Kansas State is the frontrunner to land Ivy, who says it's the lure of the program's coaching staff, along with the school's location, that is drawing him to Manhattan.
"K-State, they're favorite right now," he said. "It's just, I really like the coaches. They have a veteran as a coach (Bill Snyder). He knows what he's talking about."
Wildcat assistant Blake Seiler is handling K-State's recruitment of Ivy. An official visit is in the works, and once Ivy gets that tripped planned, he has at least two more he'd like to take.
"I think I'm going to set up some officials to Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Missouri," he said. "Two of those are around Oklahoma, so that's easy."
Offers from Oklahoma State and Missouri have yet to materialize, so those visits have to be viewed as tentative. Ivy says that OSU could make a splash in his recruitment should an offer find its way to the table, so he remains in wait-and-see mode.
"They talk to me a lot," Ivy said. "I like them, but they haven't offered a scholarship yet, so we'll see."
Joe Bob Clements is spearheading the Pokes' efforts with Ivy, who plans to make a verbal commitment after taking a handful of visits.
