Island athlete star is rising

One of the best prospects from the Aloha State of Hawai’i this season is wide receiver/tight end Waika (Walter) Spencer (6-4, 220, 4.7) from Honolulu (Hawai’i) Kamehameha. The very athletic Spencer is a standout in three sports.
“Waika is an exceptional athlete,” Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza said. “He has excellent size, excellent hands and has been a starter on the basketball team since his sophomore season.”

“Waika played a lot on the varsity football team as a sophomore but wasn’t a starter,” Souza said. “He really came into his own as a junior.”
Besides football and basketball, Spencer also makes his presence known on the track and field. He participates in the triple jump. Long jump, high jump and the 110HH events.
It will be the gridiron that Spencer get his D-I scholarship. He was a first-team all-league and was also selected all-state.
The athletic Spencer could either play tight end or wide receiver on the next level.
“Waika probably projects as a tight end,” Souza said. “He’s still young and could still grow.”
A lot of college coaches showed up on the Kamehameha campus this past spring.
“Just about the whole Pac-10 is looking at Waika,” Souza said. “He’s received letters in writing from USC and Colorado.”
Other schools that have expressed interest in Spencer are Arizona, UCLA, Washington, Oregon, Oregon State, Michigan State, Wisconsin Utah, BYU and Hawai’i.
