Is Kyle Reed a Bear

For over two weeks, we've heard rumors that Oakland (Calif.) McClymond's quarterback Kyle Reed was a silent commitment to Cal and just wanted to wait until after he took the SAT this weekend before going public with it. Earlier today, the word on the street had Reed going public with his commitment but McClymond's head coach Alonzo Carter emphatically denied that.
"I've gotten calls from three college coaches today asking if Kyle had committed," Carter said. "I can tell you 100 percent, he has not committed anywhere yet. Cal is his top choice but he's still very interested in both UCLA and Arizona. I told Kyle that we don't believe in silent commitments, once he's ready to announce, that's it and there has been no commitment yet. I just talked to Kyle and his father today and nothing has changed."

We asked Coach Carter if there was any truth that Reed had committed but didn't want it out until after he took the SAT.
"Absolutely not, he has not committed anywhere," Carter said. "Like I said, I just talked to him today and there has been no commitment on his part. Cal is his leader but it's about 60-40 over UCLA so it's very close. Cal is the hometown school and he's very comfortable there and likes Coach Tedford but I promise you, he has not committed to any school. I'll let you know when it happens but nothing has happened yet."
Despite Carter's emphatic denial of a commitment, we're pretty confident Reed is a Bear and have heard that from several sources. However, our policy is always to wait until the player or coach wants to come forward with it publicly before we make the player a solid commitment in the database. We have a time set up to talk to Kyle tonight and we'll have details on the conversation later this evening.
Reed had a very nice showing at the EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout last Sunday and is currently our No. 2 rated quarterback in the West region behind only Mission Viejo's (Calif.) Mark Sanchez.
