Is DE best in Oregon

Joe Newton, a tight end and defensive end at Roseburg High School, could be the best prospect in Oregon. Yet he’s not getting much publicity outside of the Pacific Northwest.
But the local coaches understand his value as a blue chip prospect.

“Coach Belotti came in a couple of weeks ago,” Newton said of the Oregon head coach. “Then coach (Dennis) Erickson came by this week. And coach Hart from Washington was here tonight.”
That means Oregon, Oregon State and Washington have all already made home visits – and two of them came from head coaches. That’s an impressive list of suitors so early in the recruiting process.
But Newton, who is 6-foot-7, 235 pounds, may deserve such interest. He caught 22 passes for 358 yards and six touchdowns as a senior.
“I don’t have a leader right now. I’m just going to take this visit to Washington and then probably decide.”
Newton visits UW on Dec. 7. He visited Oregon on Oct. 19 and Oregon State on Nov. 9.
