Iowa State lands its quarterback

Last weekend, Cedar Vista (Texas) High School quarterback Taylor McHargue headed to Iowa State on his first official visit. After returning home, McHargue received an official offer from the Cyclone coaching staff. Just days after that, the dual-threat prospect has decided to end the recruiting process and has committed to the Cyclones.
"I committed to Iowa State," McHargue said on Thursday evening. "I called Coach Peterson and let him know. I started looking around at the other schools recruiting me and just started weighing my options a little bit and I couldn't think of another school I liked as much as Iowa State with the coaching staff, the campus and the city."

An athletic prospect at quarterback, McHargue has received offers from Houston and Stephen F. Austin with several other major programs steadily picking up interest. Despite the athleticism to play other positions, the Iowa State coaches made it clear how they see him contributing in the program.
"They just said they thought I could help them win football games," he said. "They wanted me to come in there and play quarterback. They didn't talk about me changing positions or anything. They were upfront and honest."
At quarterback, McHargue has a chance to get on the field within a couple years of being on campus.
"They only have two quarterbacks on scholarship," he said. "No matter what, there's going to be competition but if I win the job, I could be on the field as early as my sophomore year."
With the commitment, Iowa State picks up a prospect whose stock has been steadily on the rise. However, it seems as though McHargue has no plans to entertain other suitors. Instead, he is relieved to have his decision behind him.
"I think this is it," he said. "I'm pretty sure schools will still call and try to set up visits and all the normal stuff but I think I'm done. I'm very relieved. I like being done. I'm extremely excited. Iowa State is a great place. I loved Ames, Iowa. I have a lot of excitement and all of the stress is off."
