Skinny: One glance at Calvin Johnson’s highlight film or a trip to see him personally in spring practice is having a big impact on college scouts.
“Everybody who’s come through here has told me they think he’s one of the top five receivers in the nation,” Sandy Creek coach Rodney Walker said. “This kid is big time.
“Georgia, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Miami, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Auburn, Tennessee… They’ve all shown a lot of interest. Pretty much anyone you can name has either called or come by.”
Johnson, who caught 34 passes for 780 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior, has offers from Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Florida. He reportedly favors the two in-state schools, saying he’d like to play close to home.
That won’t stop an impressive list of national powers from making their way to Tyrone this year.
“Everybody loves him,” Walker said. “His size and speed are one tough combination. You don’t find many guys 6-4 who can run in the 4.4s. Plus, he’s got some really nice, soft hands.”
Another key for Johnson is his academic background. He maintains a 3.6 GPA and is awaiting his test scores. He scored over 1,000 on his PSAT.
