Interest picking up for Brown

When Mississippi State became the first to offer Long Beach, Miss., outside linebacker Richie Brown late last week, he was both thrilled and surprised
"It was kind of unexpected," Brown said. "I didn't expect Mississippi State would be the one. But they were and it means a lot. It was real exciting. Your first offer is always exciting."
Brown doesn't believe it will be his last.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder is hearing a lot from Arkansas, Ole Miss and Southern Miss. Additionally, he attended junior day at LSU, has been invited to camp at Tennessee and has received interest from Alabama, Auburn and Texas A&M.
On Saturday, he will visit Southern Miss for junior day. The following week, Brown will check out Mississippi State. In May, there's a good chance he will visit Arkansas.
"I think Southern Miss and Ole Miss are probably going to offer real soon," Brown said. "And I've been talking to Arkansas a good bit."
To say the least, Brown is excited about the next two weekends.
"I've been around Southern Miss all my life," Brown said. "My dad went to school there. "
Brown also has previously been to Starkville, but only for games.
"It's going to be real exciting," Brown said. "I haven't really seen all the academic stuff and what they do for their student-athletes. [Meeting with the coaches] will be a big deal. I want to talk to them and see what the program is about and what the team is up to - and get to know all the basic stuff about them."
Thus far, Brown has attended only one junior day. The one at LSU.
"LSU was really nice," he said. "They have a really good program up there. I like it. I met with the linebackers coach and talked to him a little bit. They aren't recruiting me as hard as some of the Mississippi schools and such. I'm not sure when they're going to jump on board."
Brown started his first game in the ninth grade. As a sophomore, he recorded 162 total tackles. In 2010, he had 151.
He's also a track standout. This spring, he'll compete in the 200 meters, 4x200 and long jump. For good measure, Brown is in the choir, too.
He'd like to attend spring practice at a college or two, but might not have time.
"It all depends on my schedule," Brown said. "I'm pretty busy."
