Inside the numbers: Coaching changes

The four schools amid coaching moves this week were all under-performing on the field. USC had the best record at 3-2, but a loss to Washington on Thursday night was signaling a negative trend in the season. Still, Sarkisian likely would still be the coach had problems in his personal life not become too big to ignore.
Maryland and South Carolina were both off to 2-4 starts this season, with just one win over a Power Five school between them. North Texas, meanwhile, started 0-5 in McCarney's fifth year with the Mean Green. He ended his tenure with a 66-7 shellacking at the hands of FCS Portland State on Saturday.

USC's recruiting class ranking in 2015
Steve Sarkisian
Sarkisian's dismissal comes on the heels of one of Southern Cal's best recruiting efforts this century - which is saying a lot considering the classes Pete Carroll was signing in the early and mid-2000s. The Trojans broke Alabama's string of four consecutive recruiting class titles by landing three five-stars on National Signing Day. A total of four five-stars signed with the Trojans in that class, to go along with 17 four-stars and five three-stars.
Going back over the previous four classes - those players that make up the bulk of USC's roster - the Trojans averaged the eighth-best class. Their lowest ranking was 13th in the class of 2013, but their other three classes each ranked in the Top 10 of those years. A pair of five-star linebackers have de-committed from the Trojans in the wake of Sarkisian's dismissal, but their 2016 class still has 14 commits with an average star rating of 3.57. Sarkisian's replacement will have plenty of talent immediately.

South Carolina's average recruiting class ranking under Spurrier
Steve Spurrier
The Head Ball Coach was known as one of the most dynamic X's and O's minds in the game, but for as innovative as he was on the field, Spurrier was well behind the times when it came to organization in recruiting. He was much less involved in recruiting than most head coaches and did not push his staff hard on the recruiting trail.
Of the 11 classes Spurrier signed at South Carolina, only one ranked Top 10 in the country and none ranked among the top three SEC classes in any year. The name value Spurrier brought to the Gamecocks certainly was sellable on the recruiting trail, and top prospects wanted to play for him. His most notable signing was the class of 2011's No. 1 overall player, Jadeveon Clowney, but the Gamecocks were generally not building the depth through recruiting other SEC schools were over that time frame.
What's interesting is that South Carolina's 2016 class ranking actually jumped from 46 to 35 in the hours after Spurrier announced his resignation because the Gamecocks received a pledge from Rivals250 DT Darius Whitfield, who became the highest ranked commitment in their class at No. 179.

Percentage of top Maryland/D.C. prospects Terrapins signed under Edsall
Randy Edsall
The level of talent in Maryland and metro Washington D.C. attracts college coaches from across the country, but the University of Maryland is the only Power Five school located in that area. The Terrapins signing just 17 percent of the talent in their backyard during Edsall's tenure is remarkably low. His predecessor, Ralph Friedgen, did only slightly better, signing about 25 percent of the top talent in that area during his tenure.
Neighbors Virginia Tech signed 32 percent of their top in-state prospects during the same period Edsall was at Maryland, while Virginia signed 25 percent.
The local talent base understands your traditions, are less likely to transfer out and build the base of your recruiting class. The next head coach in College Park should be recruiting the backyard more effectively if he wants to improve upon his predecessor's record.
Interestingly, interim head coach Mike Locksley is one of the better recruiters of the Maryland/D.C. area from any school, signing five-star Arrelious Benn to Illinois in 2007 and also being key in landing two of Maryland's five-star signees in recent years - Stefon Diggs and Damian Prince.
