In-state WR calls Georgia offer 'life-changing'

THE LATEST: Rico Powers is a name to know in the state of Georgia. He is a 2020 athlete out of Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine who has 868 yards rushing and 525 yards receiving and 16 total touchdowns in 2017.

The 6-foot-2, 180 pound sophomore has a great frame, he is athletic, he has a nice burst when he gets the ball and he is going to attract a lot of attention in the coming months.

Western Kentucky was the first school to offer him a couple of weeks ago and Georgia did the same Thursday. Kirby Smart and Glenn Schumann spent some time at Benedictine recently and Schumann returned, this time with big news.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: "Coach Schumann came down to watch me practice basketball and after he left, I got a call from my coach and he let me know about the offer," said Powers. "I was surprised by the offer. I never thought I would get an offer from Georgia or schools on that level. It was life-changing.

"I have never been to Georgia, so I do not really know a lot about them yet. I just think it would feel more to me and I know Athens loves football — their fans are amazing.

"Getting this offer is a dream come true because I felt like I could tell my mom that she doesn't have to worry about paying for me to go to college."

RIVALS REACTION: This offer truly caught Powers off guard. He is a very humble young man at 15 years old who is a gifted athlete. He had no idea he was anywhere close to getting an offer from a school like Georgia, but he has it and he is likely to get many more in the near future. Powers has had interest in Georgia for some time and he also likes Clemson, Florida State and Miami. This offer does put the Bulldogs high on his list at this stage due to their level of confidence in him.
