Iowa has become one of the most interesting battle ground states between two solid programs each and every year.
It seems like the past five years both Iowa and Iowa State have taken turns at dominating the players in-state. One year it's the Hawkeyes' year and then the next it's the Cyclones' year to rule the roost.
If you're keeping track it definitely would be Iowa's year to crow about landing the best in-state prospects as it has done quite well when you look at the Rivals.com Iowa top 10.
The Hawkeyes have nabbed commitments from three of the state's top five players. Leading the way for Iowa's in-state haul is receiver Colin Sandeman, the No. 2 player in the state. He's joined by linebacker Tyler Nielsen at No. 3 and Cody Hundertmark at No. 4.
Iowa State is also well represented, though. Even though no Cyclone commits cracked the top five, ISU has three commits also in the top 10.
Defensive end Will Eilert is at No. 6 in the state, followed by outside linebacker Fabian Brown at No. 7, and receiver Alex Sandvig at No. 8. All three are very solid gets for Iowa State, especially Eilert, who has a great first step off the line of scrimmage and is tough to stop in pass-rush situations.
Overall the state is lead by four-star and Rivals100 selection Jordan Bernstine. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound safety put up some freakish numbers at the Columbus NIKE Training Camp and his film is also very impressive.
Bernstine projects as a safety in college, although he could also be a wide receiver or running back. He's a very physical defender who makes wide receivers pay a price to come across the middle and makes every tackle a statement. Bernstine was also one of the driving forces behind Lincoln's playoff run this past fall and finished with elite all-state honors.
Bernstine prefers not to name any favorites at this point.
"I don't have a timetable, but most likely I'll (pick a college) after the season," he said. "I'll probably take some official visits. Most likely I'll go to some schools for games. I'm looking at the schools that have offered. I have 12 written offers. UCLA, Texas A&M, Iowa, Kansas State, Pitt, Nebraska, Illinois, Purdue, Kansas, Colorado, Indiana, and Iowa State."
