Growing up just down the street from Iowa's campus, Class of 2021 Iowa defensive lineman Jeff Bowie grew up as a Hawkeye fanatic. But when he started the recruiting process in earnest, his fandom had to take a back seat, especially when in-state rival Iowa State came through with a scholarship offer. Now, Bowie is keeping an open mind as he works his way through the process, all while keeping an eye on his hometown school to see if they will join his list as well. Rivals.com caught up with Bowie at the recent St. Louis stop of the Rivals Camp Series to talk about both in-state options as well as his plan for camps in the coming months.
IN HIS WORDS
"I have offers from Nebraska, Northern Illinois, Iowa State, Minnesota and Virginia Tech. I'm talking to Iowa State a lot and I've been talking to Iowa a lot, too. Nebraska is also telling me that they want me come to a camp, but there's a lot of camps this year so I'm just trying to figure out which ones I'm going to go to. I know I have three for sure. Iowa State, Iowa and Notre Dame."
Iowa State: "That was pretty cool to get that offer because being from Iowa, it wasn't something I was expecting. But they came in and offered me early and I'm glad they did. It was pretty cool. I got to go up there last month and see the facilities and everything. I went for a spring practice and I got to see them work on the field. I also liked their weight room, it was pretty crazy how big it was and I like that they play on natural grass."
Fit into ISU scheme: "They told me they just want me on the defensive line. Nobody has really said if it's defensive end or defensive tackle but they want me on the defensive line getting after the quarterback."
Iowa: "I grew up rooting for Iowa because my house is basically 10 minutes from campus. They have told me they want to build a relationship with me and take it slow and I want to do that with them for sure. It's so close that I can go and visit anytime I want so it's pretty nice. Going there as a recruit is a whole new experience as opposed to when I was a fan. You get to see everything that's going on inside and all the work that goes in. that would be a big offer for me."
