Hunko still looking for first offer

Evan Hunko still doesn't have any offers but that's even more motivating for the Lakewood (Calif.) Mayfair pro-style quarterback as he prepares to start his senior season off well.

"It's tough but I understand they have to do what they have to do," Hunko said. "If I wasn't the best fit for them I understand they have to do what's best for them and I'll do the same whenever it's time for me to choose. I'll pick the best school for me. I understand where they're coming from. There are two sides to this game.

"(My teammates and I) are all excited. I have a couple buddies I've been going through this process with and we're all standing about the same. We all have heavy interest but no offers yet. We're really excited to go out there and ball out and show all these coaches we can play."

Hunko, a 6-foot-4, 186-pounder, is not without lots of interest. Florida International is the latest program to get involved and others have come in and out for Hunko all summer. He should know within weeks if FIU is a possibility.

"I got in touch with coach (Phil) Ockinga and we talked for a little bit," Hunko said. "I sent him my game film and highlight film. I have to call him back next week to see how they feel and where I stand with their program."

Rutgers has backed off ever since three-star Mike Bimonte from Manalapan, N.J., committed in early August. Duke has reportedly told Hunko it has decided not to take a quarterback in this class. Other schools have continued to show interest but no offers have arrived yet.

Another possibility for Hunko, who visited Connecticut, Rutgers and Duke this summer and also attended UCLA's spring game, could be NC State.

Hunko said he wasn't at all interested in the Wolfpack because he believed Athens, Ala., quarterback Stephen Rivers would end up there but after Rivers picked LSU that opened up another situation for Hunko to pursue.

The southern California standout is also trying to contact Temple and Wake Forest to gauge interest.
