Houston area QB decides

Cypress Falls quarterback Jeff Welch has verbally committed to Sam Houston State University.
Welch (6-1, 200-pounds) starred for the Golden Eagles over the past two seasons, and led Cy Falls to the state championship game this year.

"He's excited about the opportunity," father Jeff Welch said. "Coach (Todd) Whitten is an impressive guy and want Jeff to push Rhett Bomar next season."
Welch had offers from the likes of Army, Navy and Georgetown among others, but felt that Sam Houston was the right fit. Texas Tech and Rice also showed interest of late.
"Jeff has always been told he's too short, but I wouldn't bet against him," Cy Falls coach David Raffield said. "He could play in a spread system. He is good throwing on the run and has a tremendous understanding of the game."
Welch threw for just over 3,000 this season and took over the starting job last season during another playoff run.
