Honigford makes the call for Michigan

Sugarcreek (Ohio) Garaway Local offensive tackle Joel Honigford said earlier this week his decision would be coming soon, and the three-star lineman stayed true to his word, announcing a commitment to Michigan on Wednesday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED

Honigford just pared his list of more than two dozen scholarship offers down to a top four earlier this week that consisted of Auburn, Michigan, Michigan State and Oregon. That cut came just two days before his eventual commitment, but Honigford hinted that could be the case when I spoke with him earlier this week. His first trip to Ann Arbor during the Jim Harbaugh era occurred just earlier this month, but it obviously made a strong impression on the Ohio lineman.

IN HIS WORDS

“It just felt right. Right when I walked on campus I had a good feeling and everything else I saw reinforced it. Loved everything about (Michigan)."

RIVALS’ REACTION

I have to admit this one surprised me, because the sense I got from Honigford during our discussion earlier this week was that Oregon was the team he was highest on. Either way, it was obvious he was ready to complete his recruiting process and Michigan comes away with his commitment. The 6-foot-5, 277-pound Honigford does not lack for any physical tools, but will need some seasoning. The appeal that drew scholarship offers from big-name programs across the country was about what he can be, more than about what he is right now.
