Hokies, Heels lead for K

Kicker Chris Hinkebein out of Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Senior has received interest from schools across the country. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder has two schools leading for his services early in the recruiting process.
"I'm getting mail from North Carolina, West Point, Boston College, Virginia, Kansas, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech mostly," he said. "At the moment I like North Carolina and Virginia Tech a lot. Both of them have shown me a lot of interest and I like that they are pretty close to home. I like their programs a lot too because they are both heading in the right direction.
"I'm planning to head to North Carolina's junior day this weekend to check out more on them, but I like coach Bunting a lot. He already came to my school and visited with my coach and I thought that was a very classy thing to do. I like Virginia Tech because I went there last year to the Ohio game and had a lot of fun. They have also visited with my coach and I get a lot of letters from them."
Hinkebein is looking for a few things out of a school.
"I'm really looking for a school with good academics and a good football program," he said. "Academics are big on my list because I know I have to have something to fall back on after college. Besides that I don't think I want to go to a school all the way across the country as I'd prefer to be closer to home. I also want to go to a winning program that has coaches that pay special attention to me. I want somewhere that cares about character too."
Last season Hinkebein was seven of nine on field goals with a long of 52-yards.
"I think I'm a really good player in games because I don't get caught up in the moment and I'm pretty consistent on my tries," he said. "I only missed two field goals last year and they were from 40 and 52, so they weren't the easiest ones to make in the first place. I also have a real strong leg as I can kick as far as 60-yards in practice. On kickoffs I'm very good too as I put a lot of them into the endzone. I ended up going 47 of 60 on touchbacks."
The kicker prospect went on to be named first team all-Charlotte Observer, all-county and all-conference as a junior.
Hinkebein is looking at going to a Nike Camp along with a kicking camp in Las Vegas and the Shrine Bowl Combine in Charlotte.
