Highly coveted DE Trajen Odom commits to Ohio State

Trajen Odom's decision is in.

Odom, the No. 22-ranked strongside defensive end in the nation out of Matthews (N.C.) Weddington High, committed to Ohio State on Friday. Oregon and USC were other finalists for the 6-foot-5, 270-pounder originally from the West Coast.

The Buckeyes edged out the competition after a long month of official visits and several critical sit-downs with coaches along the way.

"From talking to my parents and my family, I narrowed things down to the small parts of each school and where was the best football fit," Odom told Rivals.

"It was a really hard decision. Between USC, Ohio State and Oregon, I just always went back and forth with the pros and the cons. It was a hard journey, but what was telling to me was having those close connections, genuine connections with the Ohio State coaches."

Odom spent June 14-16 weekend officially visiting Columbus and furthering his connections with the Buckeyes' coaches. That includes lead recruiter and DL coach Larry Johnson and also head coach Ryan Day.

"Going back was crazy," he started. "His background, the production of guys, and all of the time building up that relationship and having it with him ... that's something you just can't pass up."

"I really like the plans they have for me. I can see myself in that situation at Ohio State."

Day's presence was felt during Odom's official visit.

"Coach Day has plans to elevate their championship-wining program," Odom explained. "With Ohio State, it's about development. They're a winning program, competing for championships, and that's where I see myself."

"The culture there, the brotherhood, it's a true family feel. I know all the coaches and the staff are gonna take care of me. Life after football, that's a big piece at Ohio State. They're gonna get me right in whatever I want to do."
