Heisman Watch: Analyzing the contenders
Advertisement
The skinny: Boykin completed 20 of 35 passes for 332 yards and five touchdowns
(four in the first half) as the Horned Frogs throttled Texas, 50-7. His numbers
could have been much better but TCU didn't keep up its breakneck pace with such
a big lead. TCU averages nearly 51 points per game. Boykin has thrown for 19
touchdowns with three interceptions and 1,802 yards, the most out of any
quarterback on this list.

QB
The skinny: Goff continues to put up huge numbers completing 33 of 45 passes for
390 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in Cal's 34-28 win over
Washington State. Considered to possibly be the first quarterback taken in the NFL Draft,
Goff is completing more than 70 percent of his passes for 1,630 yards with 15
TDs and four interceptions. Cal's biggest game of the year is this weekend at
Utah.

QB
The skinny: USC was off this past weekend and hosts Washington
on Thursday night. Kessler is completing 73 percent of his passes so far this
season with 1,297 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and only one pick in four games
this year.
5
QB
The skinny: Russell completed 15 of 23 passes for 286 yards with four touchdowns
and an interception as Baylor steamrolled Texas Tech, 63-35. The Bears had 49
points at halftime and Russell could have put up even more impressive numbers if
Baylor stayed on the gas pedal. On the season, Russell has 1,281 passing yards
with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions.

RB
The skinny: Elliott was slipping off the Heisman list but then he turned in an
outstanding performance against Indiana which very well could have saved Ohio
State's national title hopes. Elliott ran for touchdowns of 55, 65 and 75 yards
all in the second half as the Buckeyes won, 34-27. He has 729 rushing yards and
eight scores averaging more than 145 rush yards per game.
7
WR
The skinny: In the blowout win over Texas Tech, Coleman finished with seven
receptions for 110 yards and three touchdowns. In five wins, Coleman already has
24 catches for 570 yards and 11 touchdowns. He is averaging a mind-boggling 23.8
yards per reception.
8
QB
The skinny: In a big test against West Virginia, Mayfield had another impressive
game throwing for 320 yards with three touchdowns (to three different receivers)
and one interception. Week after week, Mayfield keeps coming through with big
showings throwing for 1,382 yards with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions so far.
He faces struggling Texas this weekend.
9
RB
The skinny: Henry rushed 26 times for 148 yards and a touchdown and clearly won
the battle against Georgia's Nick Chubb last weekend as the Crimson Tide rolled
by the Bulldogs, 38-10. Stats were similar but anyone watching the game saw
Henry was much more dominant when it counted and he's now back in the Heisman
picture. Still, though, Henry has ground to make up and needs more big outings.
He has 570 yards and nine scores this season.
10
RB
The skinny: Chubb ran for more than 100 yards for the 13th straight game, tying
Herschel Walker's record which has stood for 33 years. But anyone watching the
Alabama-Georgia game saw Chubb limited by Alabama's defense except for an
83-yard touchdown run late in the third when the Crimson Tide already had the
game well in hand. Chubb finished with 146 yards and that score on 20 carries.
For the season, he has 745 rushing yards and seven scores.
