Heis puts focus on recruiting

Kingwood dual-sport athlete Brian Heis saw his hoop dreams spin off the rim as the Mustangs lost in the Class 5A state championship game. Teammate Nic Wise's game-winning three-point shot looked good, but fell off the rim as Kingwood missed a chance at earning back-to-back state championship titles.
"I thought we won in regulation with the shot, and saw it slip away in overtime," Heis said. "It's a hard way to end a great season. I'll play next year and I enjoy playing with all me friends. We hope to win it all next year. We will definitely return to Austin (site of the state championship) in 2007."

Hours after losing in the state finals, Heis (6-7, 215 pounds) entered his other athletic world – football off-season.
"My off-season goals are to get stronger and faster," Heis said. "It starts right now. I will be working out everyday until the NIKE (Training) Camp in College State, Texas. I won't be playing AAU basketball this summer. I was asked to play with the Houston Lynx, but I've decided to focus on football and play 7-on-7."
The athletic receiver has a bright future in football after a solid junior season and is receiving sincere interest from the likes of South Carolina, Ohio State and Texas A&M.
"The South Carolina coaches have been texting me recently," he said. "They are asking me to come to their one-day camp and meet the coaching staff. Coach Hazell at Ohio State is doing the same. I really like those two schools along with Texas A&M."
Heis caught 14 balls for 265 yards and three touchdowns last season.
"He missed football and came out late last year," Kingwood coach Dougle MacDougle said. "He was away from the game for a year an a half. The last time he was on the football field was on the freshman team before this year.
"He has the chance to be an upper echelon Division I kid. His size, hands and body control are special. He's untouchable in seven-on-seven and we plan to get him the ball a lot this season."
