Iowa is the latest to offer versatile Class of 2021 athlete C.J. Johnson. A Mississippi native, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Johnson received the news from Hawkeye assistant coach Kelvin Bell this evening.

"I talked to Coach Bell and he said the entire defensive staff loves my film and the type of person I am and that they would love to offer me a scholarship," said Johnson.

A second cousin of Hawkeye wide receiver Brandon Smith, Johnson likes everything he has heard about Iowa so far.

"He’s told me great things," Johnson said.

Early on in the recruiting process, Johnson verbally committed to Navy as a quarterback, but has seen his recruiting take off this fall. That includes new offers from Iowa, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Florida State, Penn State, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, and Duke, and opportunities to play all over the field.

"Iowa, Ole Miss, MSU, and Syracuse are for defensive back and Vanderbilt and Virginia have been for wide receiver," said Johnson. "FSU is for running back and slot and Duke and Penn State have just said offensive athlete."

With just three weeks to go before the early signing period and new offers arriving every day, it is starting to look like Johnson might wait until February before making a final decision.

"I’ll sit down with my family and analyze everything sometime soon," Johnson said. "It’s all happening pretty fast right now."
