BRADENTON, Fla. - Five-star cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III and his Team Tampa squad went undefeated on the opening day of the IMG 7-on-7 National Championship. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound defensive back from Tampa (Fla.) Wharton turned in another stellar showing in the 7-on-7 setting.
"I don't really try to prove anything," Hargreaves said. "I just try to have fun and compete. That is why I play, because I love the game. I am not out to prove anybody wrong or anything like that."
The Rivals100 defender hasn't given his recruitment much attention at this stage, but says a few schools are standing out at this stage.
"I have a couple schools that are standing out a little bit - Miami, Florida, and USF," Hargreaves said. "That is because I have visited each of them."
Hargreaves, who made it clear that he doesn't have a leader and hasn't eliminated anybody from the running, spoke a bit more in-depth about the three schools standing out at this time.
USF: "It is close to home. I can go home whenever I want. The campus is nice. A lot of campuses are nice though. My Dad (is there). I just feel comfortable there."
Florida: "It is just a good environment. They have good facilities, a good coaching staff, and good players. There is nothing not to like."
Miami: "It is like my old home. So it is like coming back home. I still remember everything. I know a lot of people down there."
During the time that Hargreaves is on the West Coast for Nike's The Opening, he intends to see a few other schools.
"I am going to Stanford, Oregon, and USC," Hargreaves said.
At some point after those visits, the Sunshine State defender is hoping to eventually see a few other options as well.
"I know I want to see Notre Dame and Ohio State," Hargreaves said. "There are some other schools as well."
With regards to making a decision, Hargreaves isn't working with a specific timeline.
"I will decide when I know," Hargreaves said. "When I know, I am just going to commit."
