Harbaugh reaches out to Cole

ORLANDO, Florida -- Rain was pouring down Tuesday at Under Armour All-American Game practice but Brian Cole, Sr., was smiling.

Decked out in Michigan gear, Cole had just talked to new Wolverines' coach Jim Harbaugh about putting his four-star son on the phone later in the day. Harbaugh had just wrapped up his introductory press conference in Ann Arbor and already the recruiting has commenced.
Brian Cole, a four-star athlete from Saginaw (Mich.) Heritage, has been committed to the Wolverines since July -- before this miserable season for the Big Ten school - and this week he has talked about how exciting it would be to have Harbaugh as his new coach.
It's now a reality.
"Coach Harbaugh is a proven guy," Cole, Sr., said. "That brings instant credibility to Michigan right away. It's pretty exciting. He can really make a difference with the players.
"I've been watching coach Harbaugh for several years watching him when he was in San Francisco and when he was in college. He's an intense coach, a very smart guy."
Cole's father admits to being a lifelong Michigan fan, so this is extra special for him -- and big for his son as well. Finally, a breath of fresh air has come to Ann Arbor and it's not just a new coach but arguably one of the best in all of football.
For Cole, Sr., it's a great day and it means Michigan football is on its way back. With the call Tuesday from Harbaugh, it's clear recruiting has already come into focus.
"I'm a die-hard Michigan fan anyway regardless of where Brian ended up," Cole, Sr., said. "I've always been a Michigan fan. It's exciting to get (Harbaugh). To see Michigan struggle wasn't a fun thing, but everyone in the whole state of Michigan was very excited."
For Cole's family to already be contacted by his new coach so shortly after his introductory press conference means to them that Cole is a priority.
Michigan only has six commitments -- the fewest in the Big Ten -- so it has a whole lot to accomplish in the coming weeks, but Cole is solid and his dad is thrilled with how things are going with Harbaugh at the helm.
"It's awesome," Cole, Sr., said. "It's a blessing. It's really humbling. Brian just has to work as hard as he can, get an opportunity to hopefully help and have a part of turning it around. He needs to get in there with his teammates, get going and just work as hard as he can."
