Hankerson next in line at Mainland

Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland is always home to some of the best players in the Sunshine State and one of the team’s fastest rising players is 6-foot-1, 198-pound outside linebacker Gerald Hankerson.
Hankerson, who is ranked as a 5.4 on the Rivals Rating scale, led his team in tackles the first game of his senior season, but Mainland lost to Seabreeze. They hope to rebound this week against Deltona.

“We’re going to beat them,” Hankerson said.
Hankerson described his play as relentless, and he said he’s really improved quite a bit from his junior season.
“I’m much better at reading the field,” Hankerson said. “I’m also in much better shape. I played a lot of rush end last year and I played linebacker in the first game. I’ll be back at rush end this week. I just like going out there and killing the quarterback. That’s my main job.”
Hankerson has scholarship offers from North Carolina and N.C. State. He’s received calls from those two schools, along with South Carolina and Florida in September.
“I’d say North Carolina is still my leader,” he said. “They just seem like a good team, and I like the coach recruiting me. The linebacker coach is the one I talk to all the time.”
